Birthday: July 5, 2024

Alex (my RA) is one of seven piglets born to mother pig, Shannon, a pig who was rescued by Deac and Nancy Slocumb (two fellow pig rescuers). The Slocumbs were shocked when one afternoon they discovered Shannon had given birth to a precious litter of piglets (her pregnancy went un-noticed even by a vet)! When we learned about the Slocumb’s “piglet plight” we decided to help and offered to give Shannon and her seven piglets a forever home here at Piggins and Banks. Alex (my RA) was named by Talia Perez as part of our piglet naming contest. (Read his full story here: Mother Pig and her Piglets Given Forever Home)

Shannon is a pig who was rescued by Deac and Nancy Slocumb (two of our biggest financial supporters). The Slocumbs were shocked when one afternoon they discovered Shannon had given birth to a precious litter of piglets! Apparently Shannon was an underweight pig and her pregnancy was hidden by the fact that it made her appear to be a normal weight. Due to their advancing years, the Slocumbs would be unable to keep the piglets as a pig’s life expectancy is 15-20 years. When we learned about their “piglet plight” we decided to help and offered to give Shannon and her seven piglets a forever home here at Piggins and Banks! Columbo

Kune Kune Pig
Rescued March 30, 2024
9 months old
Birthday: February 13, 2024

Columbo is a Kune Kune pig that happened to be in the right place at the right time for us to rescue him. We have a soft spot in our heart for Kune Kune pigs. They are an incredibly friendly and out-going breed. Sadly, they are a mini-pig breed (pigs under 300lbs) that are raised most often for meat. Columbo also reminds us so much of our beloved Mick (our Kune Kune pig that passed away in 2021) due to his same coloring and two wattles on his neck! We are glad that we could make room to give Columbo a forever home to watch him grow and live a full life! (Read his full story here: Kune Kune Piglet Given Chance at Life at Pig Rescue)

Charlotte

Potbelly Pig
Rescued November 29, 2020
4 years old
Birthday: February 1, 2020

Charlotte is one of the gang we call “The Three Pigs”, which also includes her friends, brothers Babe and Wilbur. They came from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and are all pink in color. Their owner loved the three pigs very much but had to re-home them because they were moving and could not take them. Shortly after taking her in we had her spayed to help with temperament and long-term cancer risk. The vet told us it was a good thing we brought her in when we did. She was diagnosed with a condition known as “pyometra” which is an infection of the uterus and a life threatening condition. This is part of the reason that it is recommended to spay pigs at a young age. Thankfully the vet was able to give her proper treatment and all was well! An absolute sweetheart, Charlotte is a gentle treat taker and loves to be pet and scratched. While Babe and Wilbur are more energetic and lively, Charlotte is calm and relaxed always living in the moment and never making a fuss about anything. He is one of the sweetest most happy pigs we have ever met, but he uses that sweetness to distract you so he can get into some playful mischief such as pushing gates open and knocking down food containers. No matter because we love him anyway! (Learn more about his history: From Walkersville, MD: It’s Jimmy the Pig!)

Mr. Banks the pig

Mr. Piggy Banks

Painted Potbelly Mix Pig
Founding Resident
4 years old
Birthday: May 11, 2020

Mr. Banks is one of the namesakes and inspirations for us starting Piggins and Banks Pig and Animal Sanctuary. Wanting to get a friend for Mary Piggins, we found Mr. Banks as a piglet available on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in June 2020. His ear had a chunk taken out of it and his tale was cut off…which we assume was because Mr. Banks had been marked to be sold for meat. Saving Mr. Banks from this horrible fate inspired us to not only train him as a certified therapy pig (allowing him to visit places like schools and nursing homes), but also led us to the decision to start a nonprofit pig sanctuary to save other pigs like him. Mr. Banks is truly one of a kind…with his handsome eye lashes, positive attitude, and smarts for investment tips! He was certified as a therapy pig by the American Mini Pig Association on his first birthday and now is one of the main attractions of our private tours given at Piggins and Banks. He even has his own t-shirt! We saved Mr. Banks’ life…and he is directly responsible for saving the lives of all the pigs that we give a forever home to.
