Mixed Breed Pig
Rescued January 19, 2021
2/28/2020 – 5/28/2025
Bruce was brought to Piggins and Banks by Sussex County Animal Services in the Richmond area with his brother Onyx. He was a large, gentle pig and loved to scratch his head or rump on tree trunks. (Learn more about his history: Sussex County Animal Services Brings Three Pigs to Piggins and Banks)
In May 2025 Bruce’s mobility had become worse and worse to the point where he was unable to use his back legs. We had our vet come ASAP and he was put on a course of daily steroids and pain meds to reduce inflammation and keep him comfortable in hopes of any signs of improvement.
We sat with him each day helping him to eat and see if he could start moving again. However, there was no improvement. His condition began to deteriorate to the point where he could not sit up on his own or even eat / drink without assistance.
Being a quality of life issue and to avoid further suffering, our vet recommended euthanasia. Bruce passed away peacefully in a bed of warm, comfortable straw.
Bruce’s leaves behind his very best friend Onyx. They were thick as thieves and may have even been brothers (their early history is unknown due to being rescues). He will miss Bruce…but will be kept company by his fellow pig friends Peter and the gentle Hamilton.
